What do you look for in young athletes as a coach?: I look for athlete's that are not afraid to work hard, carry themselves as a role model for their peers and community.

Favorite Quote: "Those who stay will be Champions" - Sign hanging in the Newberg Mat Club while I was growing up. The idea is not that everyone is going to be a state champion but for just pushing through and staying when things get tough makes you a champion because most people would just quit.

3 Future Goals: 1) To help develop a group of young adults to be the best version of themselves both on and off the mat. 2) To help build a strong wrestling community both in achievements earned and relationship amongst it's members and community. 3) Instill a passion and love for the sport of wrestling for our future athletes.

Why do you promote the sport of Wrestling?: I believe wrestling gives it's athletes so many important life lesson that help mold strong, hard working citizens. It is a sport that truly demonstrates the notion that you get what you put into it and the outcome of what happens is link to the preparation you are putting in before stepping on that line.

Coach Matt Mahoney

Coaching Title: Mat Club Wrestling Coach

Years with Lava Bear Wrestling Club: This is my 3rd year with the club.

Coaching Experience: This will be my 4th year of coaching club wrestling.

What do you look for in young athletes as a coach?: Resilience; wrestling is a very demanding sport especially in the beginning stages of competition. These young athletes are going to experience physical and emotional experiences that they have never been through. The resilience to keep coming back and learning how to better handle both the highs and lows to me helps ensure future success.

Favorite Quote: "The harder we work, the luckier we get." I am not sure exactly where this came from but for me it has held true to everything that I have done in life. In all actuality it has more to do with your hard work than luck but your critics usually see it other wise...

3 Future Goals: 1) I want to see wrestling make a comeback at all ages. 2) I want to watch the young individuals that we are coaching now become tomorrows champions on and off of the mat. 3) To build a strong wrestling community where our athletes know they will always have our support through lifes challenges.

Why do you promote the sport of Wrestling?: Wrestling to me is and has always been a life skills sport. I didn't realize it when I was younger and wrestling but the the life lessons that I learned while competing I still use as an adult.
